AI portrait background remover for collages

Put a person at the center of your collage. After adding a portrait, use AI portrait background in the Photos panel to separate the person from the scene. Keep your canvas background behind the cutout, choose a solid color, or blur the original backdrop.

How to change a portrait background

  1. Add and select a photo. Upload a portrait or group photo to a collage cell, then open Photos.
  2. Choose the people and background. Use One prominent person for a close portrait or Group photo to try to include multiple people. Choose Canvas color, Solid color, or Blur for the backdrop.
  3. Create and refine. Make the cutout, then use Refine cutout with brush to erase scene fragments or restore a missed person. Check the canvas and export preview. You can update the effect, use Undo, or restore the original photo.

Best results and limits

Use a clear photo with good contrast from the background. Group photo uses a separate model that can find several people but may include distant people or bits of scenery. Use the erase and restore brushes to correct those areas. Hair, hands, transparent objects and crowded scenes may still have imperfect edges. This tool is for people in photos; it is not a general product or object background remover. It does not generate a new scene. The cutout result is resized to a maximum edge of 1600 pixels, or 1200 pixels on devices reporting 4 GB of memory or less.

Performance and privacy

Each portrait model loads only when you run the selected mode. Detection runs in a browser worker on a preview up to 512 pixels wide or tall, so normal collage editing does not carry its processing cost. The group model is larger and may take longer on older devices or connections. Your photo is processed on your device; it is not uploaded to the model provider. The models and runtime download from Google and jsDelivr, which receive connection information, and MediaPipe may collect usage metrics. The editable project can retain both your original and processed photo, increasing its saved size. Read how your data is handled.

More portrait controls

For a tight collage cell, try AI face-aware crop to move the crop toward detected faces. You can also adjust the crop manually, change the canvas color and download PNG, JPEG or WebP without an added watermark.
